Notice of Vacancy on the West Hartford Board of Education

Applications Being Accepted for Appointment Consideration

The Democratic caucus of the West Hartford Board of Education (BOE) is in the process of filling a vacancy created by the resignation of Sean Passan on June 2, 2020.

He was elected in November 2019 to a four-year Democratic term. The Democratic caucus has ninety days to fill this seat and is seeking highly qualified, dedicated candidates for consideration.

The appointment is valid until November 2021. To continue serving, the person will need to run in the 2021 Municipal Election to earn the community’s vote to fulfill the remaining two years of the term, which ends in November 2023.

It is important that any policy-making board be composed of members who reflect the demographics of the residents it serves, so we encourage as broad and deep a pool of applicants as possible.

Serving on the Board of Education is a rewarding experience. It is challenging and a significant time commitment. Before applying, please consider if your personal and professional life allows for the time necessary to serve properly in this volunteer capacity.

Overview of Time Commitment:
• The BOE meets as a whole the first and third Tuesday of the month from September to June. Due to Covid-19, we also expect to have meetings at some point in August. During the month of March, the BOE meets weekly to allow the extra time necessary for budget workshops and regularly scheduled meetings. Meetings often begin at 7pm and last 2-3 hours on average.
• The appointed person will also serve on one or two subcommittees of the Board. Subcommittee schedules vary.
• The Democrats caucus for approximately 2 hours on Sunday evenings prior to meetings, and whenever necessary, to ensure proper preparation.
• Democratic BOE members generally attend the following events: New Teacher Luncheon (Aug.), Convocation (Aug.), the Park Road Parade (Oct.), Veteran’s Day events at the schools (Nov.), West Hartford Cooking event for the Foundation for West Hartford Public Schools (March), the Memorial Day Parade (May), Hall and Conard Graduations (June), and many PTO/school events throughout the year.
